Circle K Story 02

  • Elizabeth Homfray I have also known people like that he seems a little more determined to get peoples attention. David Lyonz go to his youtube page. Look at "Chasing Vietnamese Girls". That is way overstepping social boundaries. I am afraid he will piss off the wrong people and end up in serious bother, especially chasing young girls through alleys after admitting he knew they were scared of him.
  • Kyaw Tay Zar I remember Joey Arnold. He wanted to rent a room in my apartment but I didn't respond his email. Every single words he said in his email indicates that he's total mental.

Oh and he wants to pay $100 including all the bills and daily maid + cooking. Said he can teach me English in return. upset emoticon
  • Kris Wilkins He says in that video "I know the girls are scared of me" & then chases them? Urghh shudder, that really is creepy.

Like someone said, a shallow grave may await if he's not carefully
  • Elizabeth Homfray It was me that said that but out of concern for him and other people he needs to be sent home where he can get some proper care. Those alleys he was in are no place for foreigners at the best of times let alone chasing young girls he is very lucky that no father, brother or uncle came out to deal with him. We have all seen what happens when they catch dog thieves imagine what they do for chasing scared girls down alleys?
  • Philip Veinott he said "im like jesus, but i dont think jesus ran this fast." this guy is brilliant...
  • Kyaw Tay Zar Don't have a sister, daughter or niece here but anyone as creepy as him chases down someone I really care about, he's gonna get it. He's a total creep.
  • Kyaw Tay Zar That would be the same with other expats too, I guess. Nobody likes a girl they care about being chased down by such a creep.
  • Jonathan Barlow There's memes of him all over saying he is dangerous and telling girls to stay away from him. That could have something to do with it,
  • Kyaw Tay Zar Wait, isn't Joe Arnold a member of this group now? I just saw him in members list.
  • Kyaw Tay Zar Balls, I thought we banned him permanently. Removed him few months ago but he slipped in last month again. Just removed him and banned permanently. He caused quite a stir here months ago, I think.
  • Jonathan Barlow He didn't actually do much. People just flipped out about him for fun. Different people were creating multiple threads about him every day, whilst simultaneously complaining that they were sick of hearing about him and wanted him to go away.
  • Kyaw Tay Zar Ah I didn't know that. But then, I don't really participate much in other groups.
  • Jonathan Barlow He spammed the forum a bit, but people gladly gave him all the attention he craved and more. It was a joint effort.
  • Jonathan Barlow That was here, in expats.
  • Kyaw Tay Zar I am talking about "creating multiple threads about him everyday". But then I wasn't very active.
  • Jonathan Barlow I just saw the video of him chasing little girls down the street. It was clearly fun for the girls as they were laughing and giggling like crazy.

I still have yet to see any hard evidence that he is dangerous.
  • Philip Veinott They were laughing and having fun...
  • Philip Veinott You hear the tone of their laugh? They were not scared one bit...
  • Jake Houseago jonathon barlow, bless your heart. i know you are a newbie but joey arnold is a well known figure on these forums..he has mental problems, lets not go back in time please
  • Jake Houseago simple facts, he pretends to be a teacher. lures women (never men) into his circle, then 'takes them to a restaurant or a circle K or wherever) then demands that they pay for whatever he orders. in my opinion that is stealing
  • Jonathan Barlow You guys keep saying it. I've just yet to be presented with any actual evidence.
  • Philip Veinott Have any of you actually met this guy?
  • Jake Houseago go back in time, I'm not gonna re live it. too stressful
  • Jake Houseago i would be happy to meet him, please send him an invitation i will even buy him a pack of circle K noodles and a beer
  • Michael Bones Jake Houseago.. he has some issues going on upstairs yes, Is he dangerous? where is the evidence to suggest he is?
You say he only lures women, you are wrong. A simple check of his youtube channel shows many videos of him spending time with women and men.
  • Jake Houseago fine. i am very willing to go along to his supposed classes and see for myself, but i have heard so much shit about this guy, stealing money, bicycles and being a fraudulent asshole that i need to meet him one on one, see if he is genuine enough
  • Jake Houseago i am calling out Mr Joey Arnold right now...
  • Philip Veinott Honestly making fun of him is cool...but saying he is dangerous or this n that without face to face evidence is cruel. Making fun of a guy with clear issues and judging him over and over...are we any better?
  • Jake Houseago i know he aint dangerous, but i want him to prove me wrong. if he's a real teacher and what everyone else says is bull shit, then meet me. calling u out mr joey
  • Michael Bones What do you mean 'supposed' classes? What do you class as a 'real teacher'? Any person regardless of their qualifications is able to run and teach private classes and students. He/she would not be able to attract the best rate and environment but who cares? The students are in charge of their own wallets and can decide themselves how they want to spend their money.
  • Jake Houseago this is what someone else write on his Facebook page, just after he was 'supposedly arrested'

Why did she call police? and why did police want to throw you in jails? I don't understand why reason? You're foreign people who live in Vietnam now, if you
haven't bad actions, Vietnamese NEVER CALL POLICE and every one treat you well. I think she called police because you got noodles but you didn't pay money. You was asking her to get them freely and making her work be confuse while she was working and she was being so busy. I think that you're NEVER UNDERSTAND anything about cultural Vietnam and everything which even children can do. ( although where place they were and grew up). YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT: Vietnamese, some people are rich but some one are so poor. If she who Circle K Vietnam Staff is rich, she can give you some noodles freely then she'll pay Circle K Vietnam by herself. But sometimes she have NO MONEY TO PAY for you. I'm student and I have met you for along time. So I can understand you clearly. Did you remember last time when we went to Pandoral center? You called a big Sandwich and so many foods. Only you ate them, I didn't!.. But then you asked me to pay 680.000 (680,000) VND. I felt so sad because I'm a student and I'm poor. But you have no money, If you didn't pay it for them, they would call police. So I paid it for you. You was happy but I was so sad. Maybe you never understand me and others. You always think that every one will pay money for you!.. If you want to live in Vietnam more, change your thought, guy pls!.. Honest. HOPE YOU HAPPY!.
  • Jake Houseago wrote, not write…sorry
  • Michael Bones What's that got to do with his teaching ability? Do you believe every story you see posted on the internet?
  • Jake Houseago seeing as she said that he taught her nothing…yet she had to pay nearly 700k
  • Jake Houseago hence why I'm calling him out, just show some proof, not bring up these bad headache stories again
  • Jonathan Barlow He clearly has social difficulty and communication issues. It has created some awkward and uncomfortable situations as I have seen in his videos. However, I've seen no evidence of violence or theft. Plenty of hearsay, but no proof.

    Considering the dif
ficulty he seems to have in controlling his actions and outbursts, and also the fact that he seems to film pretty much everything he ever does and show it to the world (no matter how embarassing it might be), he seems to be a very open and honest person. If he was any kind of a threat, there should be some indication of it in his videos.
  • Michael Bones proof of what?! what are you calling him out on exactly?! As I've mentioned already the guy needs support and guidance, not hate and mockery. He has no idea about implications of his behaviour and actions and sees the world completely different to you and I.
  • John Tran I bet hes loving this attention.
  • Nina Kaiser Unchecked mental illness is dangerous.
  • Michael Bones He doesn't understand any of this John Tran! He is not what you think he is!
Nina Kaiser, unchecked mental illness can be especially dangerous when prodded with a big stick and teased for being different. He has enough about him to understand what is right and wrong (clearly evident from his video logs, if you guys have watched them) and has lived here for over a year independently without harming anybody.
  • Jake Houseago this is old news mate, go back in time and read when he stole the bicycle and punched the buddhist monk
  • Jonathan Barlow Hearsay Jake? Or is there evidence?
  • Nina Kaiser Even if he harms nobody, the fact that he feeds off this negative attention shows very low self esteem and could become his own victim via depression. Besides, just because he's went one year without harming somebody doesn't say much. Some mental illnesses such as bipolar can go through cycles that lasts years. Fact is no one knows because he is unchecked.
  • Michael Bones haha this is such bullshit Jake! A woman took the bike from him and a monk threatened to punch him because he was unintentionally disrespecting the Pagoda he was in! Stop believing the shit you see spouted on the internet!
    video EVIDENCE to come
  • Kyaw Tay Zar Ehh Jake HouseagoJoey won't hear you. He's banned from here.
  • Jonathan Barlow What the fuck is wrong with that monk? Rolling his sleeve up and threatening to punch a guy? I did not think violence was part of buddhism.

So the monks fist was in contact with oatmeals face, and after everyone playing telephone it becomes "he punched a buddhist monk"

It's easy to see how these rumors come about.
  • Elizabeth Homfray See how angry he makes people. That doesn't give you concern for his safety? A monk trying punch him, Circle K workers calling the police. You don't think he needs some help?
  • Jonathan Barlow I don't believe anyone here is suggesting that he doesn't need help. But some are suggesting that he is dangerous, especially towards young girls, and there is simply not one shred of evidence to support those claims.

    Two separate matters really.
  • Jonathan Barlow I make people angry as well. The other day a woman threatened to punch me if I did not buy a video game from her.

I don't own her anger. People should be able to control their own tempers and actions.
  • Des Snowdon Good game JB?
  • Kris Wilkins ".......At that point, we became ominously aware of a 25ft wicker phallus. Seconds later, Oatmeal was ablaze. Sheets of flame darting to the beat of primitive animal justice. One man kebabed, hundreds scarred for ever by a shared blood ritual. And yet, an astonishing sense of community here now. A positive atmosphere, a sense of a job well done, a shared sigh of relief. Very much like the bizarre euphoria at the end of an hours vomiting....."
  • Ryan Neilan According to his FB the police came in force and took him out of the circle K and cuffed him. Broke his glasses too. Who knows what the truth is.
  • Elizabeth Homfray It was 2 male police that you can see in the video and apparently a female officer came as well and said she was from the embassy and tried to take his passport. Joey's words about the female officer and the passport. I didn't see that in the video.
  • Kris Wilkins If you look at the second Video, there are more police there than at the start- they called for back up
  • Ryan Neilan His mother comments on his page. His family need to make an effor to get him home I think.
  • Tyler Wooldridge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKrflXdIxt0

He sounds like the fiscally conservative type. I'm not surprised.
  • Tyler Wooldridge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjadlWEeJEE

Seems Joey had an abusive, drunk father. Could explain his dysfunction. He also supposedly has Dutch ancestry. Thanks Holland!
  • Kris Wilkins I want to tea- shear?
  • Kris Wilkins I liked the bit in the video where he starts " he thinks he can ignore me....". Looks like he does
  • David Tâm Lương What the pho type of OS is he running...
  • Tyler Wooldridge Wow he just walks in and completely invades people's space, what he probly doesn't realize is that these monks are forbidden by their religion from acting out and stopping him but they actually have to suppress their urge. He really has no idea of the ramifications of what he's doing
  • Kris Wilkins He keeps narrating to the camera as the monk is telling him to go! I think maybe it's a shoe thing- the monk looks and points at his feet a few times?
  • Tyler Wooldridge He probably went in with his shoes on in front of that shrine. Big no-no.
  • Harris Laurence He needs a piece of lead that shit if you can call him that !
  • Florent Poilane This monk is upset because he comes in the room in obviously they are praying for a defunt. The monk asks him to remove his shoes or go out what he answers by no no no... I assume as well he doesn't appreciate that someone has a tour commenting to the camera what he sees in that private room. I m impressed the monk controls his temper that well.
  • Scotty Dinh The guy is troubled. He obviously know what he doing be he don't care. Invading people practice place, showing camera up people face saying hi multiple times to get a response. When people have to ignore him he get even more aggressive.
  • Ben Parsons Poor guy. It's almost getting to the point where we should do something. I can scarcely believe noones ever contacted the embassy about him.
  • Philip Nguyen One day some Vnese will throw him into our Saigon river, and no matter how bad it is, we wont miss him.
  • Michael Bones Philip Nguyen is that the attitude you have for all people who are not quite mentally fit? You sound like a top bloke.
  • Des Snowdon Thought this was Expats In HCMC! Not shrinks in HCMC. Amazing how so many can diagnose him. He is likely just poorly brought up and really needs to go, but I feel his days here are numbered. Praise Be!
  • Patrick Burns He is constantly being asked/told to leave shops/schools/pagodas and documents all of it. One day he and his camera are going to walk into the wrong place and start a stir with the wrong people.
  • Tyler Wooldridge Philip Nguyen I'd beg to differ. I would miss his crazy antics for sure.
  • David Lyonz Scotty: I don't think he does know this is wrong. Not everyone has the ability to understand society and how people are expected to behave. Some people just don't care, but for others they think they are doing the right thing when they're being a pain. In this guys mind he wasn't doing anything wrong. His continual cries of "I just wanted to say 'you are nice'" clearly indicate a person who is not quite right in the head.

Ultimately people who are different and crazy are fascinating. Sometimes they are entertaining, interesting, different. They are often great artists or inventors or have talents in other areas. What great painting or great piece of music was not created by a troubled soul with some mental issues ?

People do dismiss them and judge them. It makes people feel reassured to see this and think "Well at least I have it together better than that guy". But there are no "points" in life. You don't get a report card at the end that grades you according to how much property you acquired or how much money you had in the bank. Who is to say that anyone's life is better or worth more than anyone else's ?

Is having a mental problems something that makes you a lesser person, even if there's nothing you can do about it ? Does it mean that you will go through life unloved and unfulfilled ? I bet that this guy is quite happy with his life. In my experience it is those who have the least in life that are the happiest.

I have some great friends who are handicapped or mentally ill. I find them some of the most honest and genuine people I know. I often prefer their company over the fakeness of "successful normal people". Life is weird. People are strange. Better to be the orange sheep than the grey one.

However I still think he's just a bit too creepy to be around young girls. Dude needs to understand the importance of shaving and combing his hair if he's to be allowed to teach.
  • Jonathan Barlow I wanted to like your comment until the last paragraph.

Having messy hair and a beard means you shouldn't be around young girls, or be allowed to teach? Sounds like a baseless stereotype.
  • Jonathan Barlow I felt similar predjudice when I had long hair and a beard.
  • Nina Kaiser Poor upbringing is not knowing how to balance a checkbook and having bad work ethic, not being able to pick up on obvious social cues is something else.
  • Kristian Svk Somogyi aspergers probably
  • Nina Kaiser That was my first guess as well.
  • Jeremy Manser Jonathan Barlow ..fair or not I don't trust men with beards. I know it's prejudice, but I can't help what I think.
  • Tyler Wooldridge After communicating with Joey through email briefly and asking him why he's doing these things, he seems to think I'm the one with the problems. Go figure.
  • Des Snowdon I like how Jonathan Barlow often takes the side of the 'underdog', it is at times commendable. But in this instance, it should be realised that this is a person acting in a way that will dampen the image of foreigners. No, no, no it is not ok to chase girls around. No, it is not ok to annoy workers at shops. No it is not ok to annoy people at Pagodas. In summation, his overall behaviour is not ok, nor is there grounds to defend it. He has a personality disorder, no doubt & it will escalate to stupider conduct.

On one hand we all want a safer Saigon from thieves etc etc yet this oddball is running around & although not dangerous in the conventional sense, he certainly could be or his antics could lead to an accident causing injury.

No doubt he is marked now & won't get a new visa, my hope anyway.
  • Tuan Vo He just posted a long explanation:https://www.facebook.com/JoeyArnoldVN
  • Tyler Wooldridge He sounds exactly like Chris-Chan in his explanations. Too long, overly winded, and doesn't understand social cues, thinking there was nothing wrong with his actions and it's all everyone else's fault. Classic.
  • Chris Circelli This is where I believe in human euthanasia smile emoticon
  • David O'Brien just read a bit of that explanation comedy gold, me an american, I want to sue the police bahahaha as funny as that tarrin buttimer wanting to sue people for being mean to him on bookface some of the shit you get on this group its hilarious cheers
  • Jeremy Manser David O'Brien yep, I got to "me, an American".... laughed hard at the cliche.
  • Chris Circelli Dear God why couldn't he be from Canada hahahaha *Disclaimer this cat does not represent the masses of Americans*
  • Elizabeth Homfray Circle K staff like most convenience store staff handle some pretty awkward situations all over the world. I have seen how some drunk foreigners behave in the one in D2 but I haven't ever heard of them calling the police. He must of really been making them upset for quite some time he had a whole lot of receipts from the video I saw. His mother obviously knows he has a problem I looked at his FB page and she was looking for him the day before the incident as she hadn't heard from him. She obviously monitors him. I am not analysing the situation but lack of contact and his mum looking for him then this an escalated incident would appear he is having problems and has less and less options. The police forced the family that was housing him to evict him as well. Maybe he is not a danger to others but himself for sure especially that he is getting into physical altercations with police. Does anybody have a constructive way to help him? Rather than just going around and around amongst ourselves? I would hate the next thread to be about how something happened to him and the best we can say is I told you so.
  • Tyler Wooldridge He says he has a contract. I feel sorry for whatever company he works for, having to suffer that guy for as long as they do. Maybe by a "private company" however he just means himself. In that case, no biggie then.
  • Elizabeth Homfray I can't imagine anyone hiring him?????? He mostly troll Circle K's near schools and tries to pick up private students.
  • Des Snowdon His FB post is ALL nonsense, yes even the contract!
  • Jeremy Manser Elizabeth Homfray what would you do in your home country? What this guy needs is a friend, just someone to add perspective and help.... are you that samaritan? Im not I know too many fuck heads already....
  • Elizabeth Homfray I think he needs someone to talk to him that has some sort experience with people will mental health issues. I was at home I would try and make contact with his family if that didn't work I would talk to social services or a charity like Mission Australia who have the resources to handle these situations. I have seen people have tried to make contact with his mum through FB but she obviously isn't taking notice. I know the embassy will be next to useless and just direct us to the police so I don't know that's why I was asking if anyone else knew what to do?
  • Jonathan Barlow We may just have to accept that there's nothing we can do, short of taking him on as a full time ward. Even that would be a hell of a challenge.
  • Jonathan Barlow If he gets arrested will they put him in prison? Or will they buy him a ticket?
  • Elizabeth Homfray A ticket is my guess unless whatever happened involved a really serious offence involving violence or child assault. Or if he stole money from a government owned enterprise. That would actually be the best thing for him to be sent home.
  • Jeremy Manser Is it? Unless he has good insurance he is pretty screwed in America where looking after your fellow human is some kind of anti capitalist nonsense.
  • Elizabeth Homfray At least his family is there. I also think his own people will be able handle him better. Most Vietnamese that he seems to be around have little English and little understanding that he has serious social problems. He makes people here angry and aggressive toward him. I don't really understand how your health system works I know it's not free like in Australia but surely they have some sort of system to handle these people? Or do they just become homeless statistics?
  • Jonathan Barlow His own people huh? You think any random american families would take him in and feed him like they do here?
  • Jonathan Barlow He will probably get beaten to death in a big city in america. Especially if he has trouble with the law there. American cops do not have a good reputation for dealing with the mentally ill - anyone for that matter.
  • Jeremy Manser I'm from uk. I do agree with you, I'm just making the point that people really don't deal with this well. He may have problems, I dont know. There are 200 + comments on this thread and not much practial help among it. I feel for this guy but at the same time don't want the hassle of doing anything to help. I am just honest about how little I care, but I think I am not alone, here or USA no one really cares enough to help until something bad happens.
  • Elizabeth Homfray No but I think they would be better at dealing with his behaviour. Maybe not as much tolerance I imagine a Circle K in the USA would of dealt with him immediately not of waited until it got to the point where they had to call police. A better understanding that he has social issues maybe. His mothers page and his make references to church and Christianity, in Australia they have faith based charities that help with these sort of issues. They have people with experience in helping him to get a job a house etc. look I don't know maybe you think all Americans are arseholes and don't care about anyone but that hasn't been my experience I think he would cope better there, than here leeching off people who can ill afford to look after him financially or mentally.
  • Elizabeth Homfray I know the Australian consulate would do very little except contact his family in Australia and that would only be after what happened with the police. Do you think if I contacted the American Embassy they would help him? Even if it was just to give him some money to get a place to live and clean himself up? He looks like he hasn't showered in while in those police videos.
  • Jonathan Barlow I don't think all Americans are arseholes. I know all Americans are arseholes.

    tongue emoticon
  • Jeremy Manser I base my comments about US healthcare on the slander of the British system during Obamas push for universal healthcare..... in the UK mental health is terribly under resourced. As for USA people as a whole, I don't have any particular bad feeling, its a big place and includes some blood relatives.
