David Lyonz Sometimes. They're a pretty cool bunch. I think pretty much everyone in the place is undocumented hahaha. A lot of the folks in my building work in the local hotpot restaurant. I'm just hanging here because it's my girlfriend's place and it's got all my furniture in it because I haven't bothered moving yet. At first the idea of sharing a shitty 1.5 million dong/month place in Binh Chanh seemed like hell on earth, but then I realised .. hey, it's with 4 great girls. I can handle that. It's actually nice to have company. Living alone was starting to make me a little sad. The boys from next door come over to listen to music and smoke pipes with us. Hehehe.

David Lyonz
David Lyonz There's more than one way to skin a cat mate. I had a 3 million dong apartment, but I traded it to share a bed with 4 girls for 300k/month for a week and then decided "Hey, I like this. This is fun". Plus, Binh Chanh is great. No one speaks a word of English. They certainly don't ask people for their papers. I don't know why you're making that a limitation on your life. I've been carrying around a police clearance certificate for the last two years and ONE employer has asked to see it, in Da Nang and even when I brought it to the interview they brushed it away and said "I don't need to read it. As long as you have one, that's good enough". I was disappointed. That thing cost me $55 in Australia and no one even wants to see it. Such a waste of time and money. This is Saigon man. No one gives a shit.

You
speak Vietnamese, right ? There's probably someone in the building who would take you in. It's a big place. I've never guessed at the occupancy but I did log into the router one night and saw 213 devices connected hahaha. No wonder the internet drops out so much. Every room has fricken 4-6 people staying in it and they've all got at least one mobile.

David Lyonz The landlord apparently thinks it's funny to call the building "Nha dep" which I find ironic as I joking call it "Hell" since the rooms don't have windows and it's as hot as hell. I recently started calling my girlfriend "ac quy" (the devil) and she was like "That's not funny. Don't call me that" and I said "But I call the house am phu.. hell. So that makes you the devil, ac quy". I had to sleep on the mezzanine that night. 😂🤣😅

David Lyonz I know you're not gay. I was just playing along. But I've seen the videos. It's pretty obvious that you're not gay by your selfies.

There's lots of things to be scared of in life. People. Traffic. Spiders. Ok not in Saigon. But I am scared of spiders
in other places that have a lot of spiders. I'm not scared of traffic though.

The important thing is that you have a place to stay. Then you work on getting a job. You don't want to be a beggar man. That's really not a cool look for a white dude. Just find some friends and see if you can stay with them and then find some work. You don't need to have a 40 million dong school contract to live, man. I'm not really into house-sharing. I value my privacy. But when I spent a night at my gf's with her friends and she begged me to move back in with her I said afterwards "This is sort of cool". It helps that her friends are cool and we all get high and watch cartoons together after work.

David Lyonz
David Lyonz Well, I don't know where he went to. I just know it was a church in District 1. I think it was in Co Giang.

Yeah well. Look mate, everyone has problems. My friend is severely disabled. I've spent a lot of time working with homeless people in various countries and they all have problems. That's why they're homeless. But you can overcome them, ok ? You can't just expect people to help you. You have to help yourself. It's no big deal to be homeless. I spent a few weeks homeless in Perth for a while hanging out with some of the locals, just following them around, writing. There's naturally a lot of support networks there for people who are homeless to help them get free meals and such. But housing is another matter. Doesn't matter whether you're in Saigon or Perth or New York... housing costs money.

I mean, I have money in the bank and I'm capable of working, but right now I'm just spending some time writing and meditating. Living in a 300.000d/month share house is just a choice right now because my girlfriend doesn't want me to leave, but eventually I will because like I said I value my privacy.. but the point is that it's not hard to come up with 300k a month is it ? Even if you teach in the park for 100k/hr.. you only have to work for 3 hours and you're covered.

What street people, transients, homeless will tell you is that you can't focus on the end goal or the obstacles. You just need to focus on what you need right now, such as a place to sleep. Then you pick your next goal such as "Get some clean clothes". Then your next one can be "Find some work". That doesn't mean "Find a job". Forget about work permits and police clearances and visas. That's way beyond where you are right now. That's for full time employees with careers. There's about ten million ways you can earn money in this city. Literally all you have to do is buy something, and then sell it to someone else at a profit.

I remember when some dude approached me in Bui Vien many years ago with a bunch of socks and said "Hi. Socks. 30.000d per pair" my first comment was "Pfft. They're 15.000 for two pairs on the side of the road dude. What are you trying to sell socks for in Bui Vien" and he just smiled and said "Need money. 30.000d" and I thought "Shit. I need socks" So I bought two pairs of socks from him. And he made 45.000d. All you have to do is try. You smile, you talk to people, and you try and sell them something. It can be a pair of socks, an English lesson, or a steamy night of romance with the famous Oatmeal. I'm pretty sure the latter option makes you even more money, but you'd definitely want clean clothes and a smile for that.

I know you know how to talk to people. I know you know how to teach. You're not an amputee. Some people have much bigger obstacles to overcome in life than just fear mate. Some people have to drag themselves around on their hands. And you know what ? Some of those people still manage to raise 6 kids while they're doing it too. So don't use fear or misery as any sort of excuse for not helping yourself to get out of this rut you're in. You're better than that. You can fix your life. It might not seem like it right now, but you can.

You're smart. You can use a computer. You can teach. You have all your limbs intact and you're not dying of an incurable disease. So.. get out there and do something about your problem.

David Lyonz
David Lyonz I have a Vietnamese preacher friend who spends way too much time whining and asking people to "help" him. But he does at least try and help himself. I met him in the rain at a bus station about 5 years ago when I was hiding from the rain and he always seems to crop back up in my life again sooner or later. He just walks up to people and says "Hi. I really need a job. I speak 4 languages, I'm healthy and I can work". He says "The Lord helps those who help themselves".

Of course he also says "Can you help me" a lot and people aren't really fond of hearing that. But the first time I met him he didn't ask that. He asked "Can I help YOU ?" and I said "Maybe you can" and I took his number. A week later I called him and said "I'm in Vung Tau for a few days. I've been giving flowers to this girl at a bar every day. I want you to do it for me while I'm away. I'll send you the money. Just go and buy some roses from the market and deliver them to her. That's all you have to do". And he did it every day while I was away.

I didn't win the heart of the girl, but I did help out this fellow that needed a job, so I guess someone got something out of the situation.

Remember... when you're asking for work, don't ask what people can do for YOU. Ask what YOU can do for THEM. I've hired people to photocopy books before, distribute flyers, deliver flowers for me. All because someone said "Hey, if you need anything and I can help you, please call me". So I do.

I don't have need of anything like that right now, so I can't give you a job. And, without meaning to be rude... I can't have another dude move in with me disturbing my little love nest. But I'm sure someone could. There was a job in Da Nang this week for foreigners who wanted to volunteer a few hours a week teaching English in exchange for a room in a house and meals. Lots of people look for that sort of thing. That's something you could do. It doesn't have to be a super demanding job. You just need enough to share a room and to buy some mi goi. Do you know how many employers will happily pay you in accommodation and food ? Plenty. There's lots of volunteer-based schools around.

Joey Arnold David Lyonz, my fear isn't fear of doing stuff.... it is about making the best choices possible..... I am not afraid of doing stuff..... and I do think about one thing at a time too....
Manage
David Lyonz
David Lyonz Well, there's only one person who can help you with that... you. You know you're capable of working and living and renting an apartment. You've done it before. So do it again.

I have to go to sleep mate. Don't think so negative about it. Remember.. e
at, shower, find a place to sleep, and go ask people what you can do for them. Don't sweat about stuff like visas and that shit. Just focus on what you need to survive. And if you DO approach any community organisations or individuals.. remember, it's your attitude that makes people help you or not help you. Often it's as little as a smile and a friendly demeanour. Turning up somewhere like death warmed up, looking hopeless and whining will not get you help in this world. Only a positive attitude will.

Wander around around the city. Sometimes when you're down on your luck you have to walk all day to find what you need. But if you talk to enough people, eventually you WILL find what you need. Or you will find what someone else needs and be able to help them with it.

Goodnight Joey. Take care of yourself.
