Don't Be an Idiot Foreigner Like Joey Arnold:

Don't suck like Original Oatmeal Joey Arnold, some say: I am Joey Arnold: I am mentioned in the following thread in an unjust way: what people say about me is not accurate, but here goes nothing anyways as follows:

Remember the naked motorbike foreigner photo...well look at this

  • Mucahid Aniki a person who believes that a particular race is superior to another. -> " I dont care what other people think of me, since I am having a holiday. In my own country I do care" , so in other words, you care less what Vietnamese think than that people from your country think, or to rephrase it more logically, you regard the attitudes of your own people to be more important than the other. why?

  • Jake Catlett No, this guy probably would do exactly this in his own country. In his own country he most likely doesn't have to worry about people wanting him to be injured or jailed because they disagree with his appearance. I see no racism whatsoever from his appearance, but I detect heaps of hatred and intolerance coming from people in this thread towards him.

  • Mucahid Aniki Gay pride is legalized obscenity on the street. Many gays don't approve of it, but it in any case they have reason to do so. This is just a jackass with a complete disregard of the local population. He has a holiday, and everyone should know that. I def. think that the amount of backpackers behaving inappropriately in Vietnam is way bigger than San Francisco.

  • Mucahid Aniki It bothers me because I am also a foreigner in Vietnam, and I do care how 'we' are perceived. So Id rather not have those guys in the country I love so much  Jonathan it is racism for real. Those people have no regard for the country they are in, how else would you like to label it? Why in Holland, where I am from, I never meet these kinds of Borats?

  • Jake Catlett Well, come on then... Give the Vietnamese more credit than to assume that they're going to look at one idiot and then believe that he/she represents all foreigners. If they do, then they're ignorant as well. It's like people worrying that that Joey Arnold/Oatmeal fool is going to give us a bad name. The Vietnamese are smart enough to know the difference between foreign culture and an idiot.

  • Jonathan Barlow I would label it as: funny, weird, crazy, inappropriate, offensive, stupid, genius, avant-garde, over the top, practical, and so on.

Racism is when you say one race is superior to another, usually your own. That's just not what this is. It's just not.

  • Mucahid Aniki Trust me, i had Vietnamese friends asking me why foreigners don't like to take a shower and wear shitty clothes, because the only foreigners they see are either backpackers or on TV. Maybe in Saigon its different, but especially in the smaller cities, people are constantly seeing those douchebags.

  • Mucahid Aniki The fact that they don't do it in their own countries, makes their motives racist at least. Plus the loads of crap I hear from them when they are talking about locals .

  • Jake Catlett There will always be random idiots. Be above it. Don't be him, show people something else. Give the Vietnamese credit for being tolerant enough not to jail, harass, or beat the fools. Getting upset about the behavior doesn't change anything.
  • Mucahid Aniki I am above it, but that doesn't mean I can't criticize it. Living in Vietnam has shown me so many jackasses like that dude, that Im fed up with it. I do give the Vietnamese credit for it, but I would have absolutely no problem if they would arrest him for being obscene like that. He'd def. learn a valuable lesson.
  • Mucahid Aniki Man, I had countless experiences with people like this, the first was when one foreigner behind me thought it was a good idea to show his genitals to his friends in a restaurant at 7pm, where there were also kids. Do I have to be tolerant and say, well that is his "lifestyle"? The staff of the restaurant was really too sweet for that guy. Id kick him out of my restaurant.
  • Jake Catlett And once again... which thread are we commenting on?? This is a picture of a Vietnamese woman wearing a shirt that has pattern on the back that looks like panties...
  • Jonathan Barlow The local people that make generalizations about "foreigners" (does that mean white people?) are actually being more racist.

Imagine if I said "Why do Asians wear shitty clothes and don't take showers?" Wouldn't you conisder that racist?

If something is racist when a white person says it, then it must also be racist when a non-white person says it.
  • Mucahid Aniki The purpose of this thread has forced me to comment on that Borat.
  • Jake Catlett That was one lowly piece of shit, and a guy pulling out his cock in a restaurant is totally different. I don't see the connection.
  • Mucahid Aniki If Asians would come enmasse to Holland, being unclean, wearing shitty clothes, and have a complete lack of understanding or regards to the locals, I wouldn't find it an unreasonable question. Hence, I am not very fond of British tourists in Amsterdam either. The fact that they ask it to me, instead of automatically assuming that it is the case, shows that they have been willing to consult others before they made up their opinion. As opposed to those two-week backpackers who think that they can tell me something about how the Vietnamese culture really is. Jake, I do see the connection: both of them dont care about what the Vietnamese think, they behave like that, because they feel they are able to, as opposed to what is acceptable in their own countries.

  • Jake Catlett I give you this, Mucahid, at least we can disagree in a civilized manner. There's been way too many people recently who just insult anybody on the thread that doesn't agree with them. Cheers for that.

  • Jonathan Barlow So if I go to canada and walk around in a speedo am I being racist? If a chinese guy comes to vietnam and walks around in a speedo is he racist?
  • Mucahid Aniki Jonathan it depends on where you are from, and why you are doing it. I don't think Borat did it out of racist motives, but it is more the racist mindset which bothers me. I can't make up much out of that photo, so I am trying to link it up with my own experiences.  anyway im going to sleep guys, chuc ngu ngon

  • Jake Catlett I see what Jonathan is trying to say. Let's put it in a different context - Chinese people in America have a bad reputation for spitting in public and pushing to the front of the line at stores and on public transportation. This is totally unacceptable in our country. Are they racist because they don't behave the ways the locals expect them to? We find it offensive, rude, inconsiderate... but it's not 'racist'. Just ignorant.

  • Jonathan Barlow It's an interesting perspective anyway Mucahid, and I know some western tourists look down on the local people and feel they can get away with doing whatever they want, and some of them might be racist in that respect.

But this is a very far fetched a
nalysis for one guy in a speedo.

Racism is a serious issue and I think we need to be careful not to overuse the term. It's being used so much nowadays that it's beginning to lose all significance. It's to the point now where a guy is called racist just because he wore a speedo in public once.

So the next time you say someone is racist what are we supposed to think? Does that mean he supports enslavement and genocide of all non-whites, or does it mean he just wore a speedo once? See what I mean? No one is going to take racism seriously anymore if we start calling everything we don't agree with racism.
