To tell you the truth that I translate every daily news into Vietnamese for my students from English articles posted on Vietnamnet English, Tuoi Tre News, ... I just share some articles related to expats to this group. I hope you don't mind and browse through it

When I first arrived here 10 years ago I tried to offer hospitality training to all the bars and restaurants around PNL area. Both English skills and general customer expectations of serving staff. Not one Vietnamese owned place was interested. They all thought they knew better.

What's with recent fixation on tourist "development." Is the economy that anemic? The banks and SOEs on that much trouble?

Well it's a question to expats that Vietnamese would like you guys to answer, hopefully you can respond with more than just bitter remarks... Anyways, most obvious thing which doesn't require any serious money is amke bui vien street a pedestrian zone

Laz, most tourists don't go to Bui Vien/PNL. They travel, see sights. PNL imo, is for the youngins passing through town. Yes, they are tourists, but bui vien is just a stop over.

Why is bui vien being focused on. You think tourists come to VN to go to bui vien. Saigon as well. Saigon is a 2-3 days stop on the road to others things. Saigon is a half-day, actually.

We need to teach mindful/consideration of others classes to tourists. Both of these women in this picture needs to get each one their own cycle. Both of you are too fat to be in the same one. Duh! Tourists need to be mindful of the country they are visiting. Compare the cyclist size with these two women. Stop being cheap!

for once it will be nice that cab and cyclo drivers speak english and could take you to places. Or maybe having personal tour guides for a day for a fixed price.

The driver makes that choice and charges accordingly for size, so stop being so ridiculous, Vietnam has seriously let itself down, get over it and do something about it.

This picture clearly explains foreigners' fault to squeeze 2 fat bodies in this cycle. VN need to seriously think about teaching workers how to say no to every job offers from foreigners. If they have no service then prices will raise. Simple supply & demand.

the point is people dont want to change so relax, just care about your own business and family. Some places offering international standard, should recomend in some yellow pages, that would really help to increase quality. Anyone starting that i am in.

Went to a presentation event last night for a life insurance company "Dia ichi Life" which reiterates a few observations for me. Vietnam is a very young country from a economically view point, just a generation ago, the population was predominately far
mers, where starvation was common, double digits unemployment rate as high as 50% was common (mid 80s). Coupled with majority of the older generations having died during or after the war through famine, agent orange, disease as a byproduct of the war. So you have a massive generation gap of knowledge and leadership missing which needs to be filled in along the way. There was a few "snake oil salesman" technique used which made me both very sad and angry. Angry that bait-and-switch is allowed, there's no consumer protection, that big companies offers supposedly great packages and promises which is based on outright lies, deceit and manipulation. Sitting next to my lawyer friend, we were absolutely gobsmacked at how crook and veil they were in their tactic in getting people to sign up.
